Long Haul - Big Hearts

Pete - The unsung hero…

Posted by Doug on July 18th, 2008

In a new series, dubbed “Unsung Heroes” our favourite trucker’s story hits the airwaves.http://www.visiontv.ca/Programs/specials_heroes.html  VisionTV, Wednesday August 6 at 10pm, will be a chance to reflect on the tragedy that continues to affect so many lives in the south.  This brief chapter of an ordinary guy’s life is also a reminder that you don’t have to be powerful, or important to get big results.  It’s a  shining moment in a desperate situation, that will make you proud of the virtuous nature that Canadians are famous for.

And if you don’t have a chance to tune into the VisionTV broadcast, all is not lost.

CTV’s Outdoor Life Network (OLN) will air the Documentary on Sunday, August 31st at 9pm.

So there you have it.   Two more chances to feel good about the human spirit.  And please let the kids stay up late for this lesson in the “Power of One”!

LONG HAUL goes to the UK

Posted by Doug on November 2nd, 2007

LONG HAUL BIG HEARTS is showcasing at the Sheffield DocFest Videotheque between November 7 and 11 in England. The three time award winning film about an ordinary guy who did something extra-ordinary was picked as a ‘best-bet’ by every TV book and newspaper in Canada for its World Television Premiere on VisionTV in the summer of 2007.

Sharon Baker, founder of the Hearts and Minds Film Festival in Dover Delaware where the film won it’s top award, said that Long Haul embodies the best about the human spirit. She said “It was for me, about the ‘power of one’. One person against a gigantic system that is not delivering while people are suffering and one guy says, you know what ‘I’m going to make a difference; I’m going to do something.’ To me that was enormously powerful, moving and exemplary. I think you want to teach children how to be charitable and kind in a divisive and mean world, they should take a look at this film, because this says, I don’t care how big the machine is, I’m going to take it on and I’m going to do something, because I’m moved as a human being and I’m going to take it into my own hands and give it a whirl. “

International Distribution is being handled by Ellis Entertainment and interested buyers of the film should contact sales@ellisent.com. +1-416-924-2186 ext. 228

Another win At ReelHeART

June 23/07 was another great day for the doc.  A good crowd was on hand for the screening at the Innis Town Hall in TO.  Peter and Buddy slipped into the theatre after the screening started, so most people there didn’t know he was there.  Before the applause died down at the end of the film I ran down to the front and asked the audience to greet the stars of the film.  Once again the crowd came to their feet and gave Pete and Buddy a standing ovation.   That says something about how people feel when they meet a real hero.

We adjourned to the foyer of the theatre where the Q & A went on for almost as long as the film.  People are still interested and concerned about our less-than -fortunate neighbours.  http://www.reelheart.com/2007/zenphoto/index.php?album=june-23-mo&image=june23_19.jpg

Topping things off for this event was the second place award for short or long form documentaries!  Not bad for a couple of boys from Bowmanville!

A Documentary about Operation Katrina

The Mississippi coast was extremely devastated after Hurricane Katrina unleashed her fury on August 29, 2005.

Doug, Pete, and Buddy

Acting on gut reaction and emotion, a Canadian trucker and his blind dog set out to do what the government said "could not be done." Peter Bruno rallied concerned citizens of Durham Region in Ontario to donate relief goods, and then traveled over 1200 miles to deliver them. Peter ended up being the first long haul trucker into the hardest hit area getting the least amount of help. His destination: Camp Coast Care in Long Beach, a gathering place for relief workers and volunteers from around the world. There, they minister to the needs of victims whose homes have been reduced to piles of rubble.

This compelling story of a man with a mission, does not end there. Peter is determined to do more, but he faces a huge personal obstacle. One year later the documentary takes you back to Mississippi to witness what has been accomplished to rebuild lives and homes in the aftermath of North America’s worst natural disaster.
